One fine morning my tank was low so I pulled up to the nearest gas station. The moment I parked my car, this friendly guy came over and signaled me to pop the hood. I figured, well my car probably needs some battery water or maybe some black oil.
As I was refueling my car he turned and said to me.
"Hmm seems like your radiator needs some proper fluid (as he emptied the radiator of its previous contents). Look how dirty it has became. You cant run a car like that."
I was like uh… ok sure change it then.
"Great! How many do you wish to purchase?
Just one thank you.
"OH no no no, you need at least 7 to fill it up. At best 4 mix with water"
What! Fine how much is one then.
"15bucks per bottle. (while running over to get a whole box of it) You see its good quality, imported from UK"
At that point I was thinking to myself. What have I got myself into. Not only did I allow him to empty my radiator fluid, now have to buy new ones. ARGH. So that is what I did. I bought 5 which totaled up to RM75. The whole time driving to work after that I tried to convince myself that the new fluid was really worth it. I was complementing the smooth acceleration, more power in the engine and other stuffs.
What it ever it was. I had absolutely no idea what radiator fluid does and when should I change it or even whether it cost RM15 per bottle. All i know is that I was RM75 poorer when I left the gas station and I had to live with it.
I learnt an important lesson that day. If that guy had a booth on the side selling bottles for 50c I wouldnt have even bothered about it. What made the sale was the fact that he came over to "pre-sell" me. Goes to show that if you really want to sell something to someone, you have to make that extra effort. Plus if a person comes to a shop/website without an intention buy anything, at the end of the day with enough convincing, a sale can be made.
Also, Im never going to let anyone pop my hood in the gas station again :/
